Perception of the African American Males Free Essays
Impression of the African American guys African Americans guys are viewed as perilous dependent on a bogus character, misinterpretations, and falsehood that are accessible in the media; this incorporates yet isn't constrained to rap music, news, and TV appears. This misinterpretation can be followed as far back as servitude. The view of blacksââ¬â¢ guys as being hazardous started when the slave came to America on 1619. We will compose a custom paper test on Impression of the African American Males or on the other hand any comparable point just for you Request Now Because of the circumstance of being treated as property, to be uninhibitedly purchased and sold, and that the proprietor was allowed to separate a couple or family whenever basically by selling a portion of his/her slaves. African slaves began to carry on in a threatening way. Due to their conduct the Caucasians promptly began to arrange the slaves as being perilous, and they should be manageable as though they were wild creatures. This lead the slave drivers to begin putting chain and strolling around with their rifles when they would be in the fields with them. As it was expressed in ââ¬ËThe Brut Caricatureâ⬠, it depicts people of color as naturally savage, carnal, dangerous, and criminal; meriting discipline, and possibly passing. Because of the negative impact and depictions of African Americans guys, these people are regularly misinformed. The nature versus sustain hypothesis becomes possibly the most important factor. I. e. Low salary dark guys are inclined to inborn characteristics, while conduct qualities are found out I. e. through the media. ââ¬Å"Get Rich or Die Tryingâ⬠is the attitude of most African American guys with the assistance of the media. Most guys consider themselves to be rap stars, sports stars, and additionally humorists. There is restricted presentation of African American as specialists or legal advisors at an early age its discovered that their possibility of accomplishment in life is constrained. The men in the low salary networks have the propensities of needing to become like the ââ¬Å"white manâ⬠. The primary issue is that they depict the possibility of ââ¬Å"get rich quickâ⬠. These discernments cause them to transform into drugs, and from that point into brutality and violations. As per a 2006 National Urban League report 33% of dark guys will invest energy in jail before their 35th birthday celebration. This reality could be a result of the secondary school dropouts and the helpless understanding they get from society. Truly, I said the helpless comprehension from society, since individuals of color are one of the least comprehended gatherings in our nation. Individuals donââ¬â¢t take a gander at the conditions that cause a great deal of people of color to be in the circumstances theyââ¬â¢re in today, they simply take a gander at the outcomes. â⬠According to my discoveries, among men, blacks (28. 5%) are around multiple times almost certain than whites (4. 4%) to be admitted to jail during their life. I additionally noticed that there are more dark guys in jail in America than are in school. (The Black and White of Justice, Freedom Magazine). Volume 28. Another ramification for African Americans itââ¬â¢s that the ââ¬Å"monsterâ⬠picture given by the Caucasian individuals are convey by the helpless African American individuals. As indicated by Stallworth (mid 1990ââ¬â¢s) youthful dark guys keep on following examples of subjugation times. Many satisfy white Americaââ¬â¢s picture of them authentically by turning out to be fruitful criminal rappers, others satisfy these picture misguidedly by turning out to be ââ¬Å"bad niggersâ⬠Rappers, in this manner fortify the prevalent view that as ââ¬Å"bad ass niggersâ⬠youthful dark can accomplish popularity, acknowledgment, and feeling of being (someone). On the off chance that they lose, in any case, they can confront a long remain in our correctional facilities and penitentiaries or even substantially injury and demise. Which itââ¬â¢s happening now days. Media and the African American Males As per the book ââ¬ËBlack Demonsââ¬â¢ there is a ââ¬Å"black pathologyâ⬠a major shortcoming in African American families that can be followed to their encounters as slaves. The news media, for instance, have started to lead the pack in likening youthful African American guys with forcefulness, rebellion, and brutality. In like manner, the diversion media have energetically submitted their general direction to the writers, and these bogus pictures influence race relationship as well as make a self felling prediction for African American youths, whose constraints of accomplishment can be resolved for them by recommendations in the media. A typical generalization about African American men is that they are take part in tranquilize misuse a lopsided way which itââ¬â¢s false on the grounds that as indicated by insights from the US branch of Health and Human administrations that albeit eight percent of African American guys cocaine, eleven percent of whites have utilize a similar medication. This is, notwithstanding, not the feeling that we get from watching the night nearby news or even a scene of TV program COPS. Blacks Stereotyped of Being Intellectually Inferior and Criminals. Another normal negative generalization, sets up the African American male as mentally substandard. Studies coordinated by therapist Claude Stale, show that African American adolescents know that they are vilified as being mentally sub-par and the go to class bearing what clinician Claude has called a ââ¬Å"burden of suspicionâ⬠Such weight can influence their perspectives and accomplishments. These shadows hang over vilified individuals regardless of their status or achievements. These marks of disgrace can possibly move them of their exclusively and incapacitate their endeavors to break out of the cliché jobs. Blacks are the storehouse for the American dread of wrongdoing. Solicit anybody, of any race, to picture a crook and the picture will have a dark face. The connected among obscurity and guiltiness itââ¬â¢s routinized by terms such a ââ¬Å"black-on-dark crimesâ⬠or ââ¬Å"black crimesâ⬠. I likewise need to specify the ââ¬Ëblack savage generalization emerge in the mid 1870ââ¬â¢s. Such generalization is one of the photos white Americans have in their minds about individuals of color: as savage, vicious incredibly solid and not thinking about good and bad. Indeed, even today as per my discoveries , blacks are multiple times bound to be genuinely undermined, hurt or killed supposing that their race than whites. So this thought of whites as serene and blacks promotion taking steps to white isn't established truth be told. It is established in something different. Truly, there are people of color who are fierce and savage, who do unspeakable things. In any case, there are white men like that as well. In either case they are not really basic enough to sensibly decide oneââ¬â¢s thoughts regarding the conventional individuals of their race. Rap Music and its impact in African American guys Rap music commends foulness. Without a doubt, it markets profanity; that is its item. It is the obscene overabundances of rap-the foulness, the larger than usual adornments, the bare avarice, the sexual forcefulness that are its trademarks. New media consideration on rap music appears to be fixated on occurrences of viciousness at rap shows, rap producersââ¬â¢ unlawful utilization of melodic examples, hoodlum rapsââ¬â¢ shocking enthusiasts of cop murdering, and female dissection, and Black Nationalist rappers recommendations that white people groups are fallen angels devotees. It appears that rappers to see the impact they have in individuals for the most part African American individuals, and by state this kind of things they send a wrong message to their enthusiasts and others by and large. In the greater part of the melodies you can locate an elevated level of bothered language, pictures, and horrific acts situations. . As indicated by the creators of these tunes, they simply make it for the amusement of their fans without thinking about the picture they are given of their kin and themselves. One inquiry and numerous answers from our general public I took the obligation to discover the observation that regular US residents have towards African American guys, by presenting an inquiry on (answersyahoo. com) individuals from all around our nation responded to my inquiry. Coming up next are the solutions to my study. â⬠¢ People noxious generalizations the dark guys with the ââ¬Å"5 Dsâ⬠ââ¬Ã¢â¬Å"Dumb, denied, hazardous, freak, and disturbedâ⬠. â⬠¢ Lazy uneducated â⬠¢ Drug sellers â⬠¢ Poor â⬠¢ Hate different races â⬠¢ They are filthy â⬠¢ Loud, upsetting, discourteous My Opinion Therefore and numerous other African American guys are think about hazardous for our general public. Be that as it may, stop and think for a moment, would they say they are on the whole extremely risky or this is just an unfortunate mix-up? Would we be able to pass judgment on them all in general, or there are some of them that can be prohibited of being generalized as ââ¬Å"dangerousâ⬠, ââ¬Å"criminalâ⬠, and so on? As I would like to think we can't made a decision about them all in general and we ought to likewise attempt to comprehend the explanations for their activities. We need to figure out how to be liberal and see things from alternate points of view. We likewise need to understand that not everything that we see and tune in the media is consistently reality, there is consistently per second piece of a story and more often than not we neglect to search for that subsequent part. African American conduct has been molded by us (society) as a result of our abuse towards them and our racismâ⬠¦ I accept in the event that we change the manner in which we take a gander at them and express about them, they will change their conduct and we no longer should utilize the announcement of ââ¬Å"dangerousâ⬠when alluding to an African American male. End To finish up to this issue being referred to I simply need to state ââ¬ËBlack or white, God allowed us the chance to succeed, and paying little mind to the circumstance we are managed, we would all be able to carry on with the existence we envisioned. After s long stretches of examination I canââ¬â¢t state there is an off-base or right hypothesis about African American guys in light of the fact that everybody has their own particular manner of reasoning and their own feeling. In any case, just to include ââ¬Ëthe world would be stunned to realize that most of people of color settle on the correct decisions and fabricate effective familie

If you are to solve a problem, you must accurately identify and even understand it.There are two aspects of a problem which can get you confused:Symptoms â" these are the signs that there is a problem. If you need any evidence, these will prove it. Examples of symptoms of a problem in business include low sales, cash flow issues and expired goods.Causes â" these are the root of the problem. Like what happens with a big tree, the roots hold it in place. The bigger the problem, the bigger and deeper the roots are. If tackling a problem is proving a problem in itself, then know that the issue is deep-rooted.Just as is the case with diseases, itâs easy to focus on the symptoms and start fighting them. This will only lead to frustrations as the signs will go away but soon show up again. And the next time they come up, they might be worse. You cannot afford to waste your resources strategizing against symptoms. For good results and maximum benefits, you need to address the root problem.Considering that youâre strategizing with an end in mind, targeting symptoms guarantees a series of failures. This will lead to frustration and a negative attitude towards striving to achieve your goals.Example SituationYou started a bakery business last year. You had done your market research well and decided on this business idea. You love baking and enjoy coming up with new recipes. You have hired talented and equally enthusiastic staff consisting of a sales person, cashier and 2 bakers. With sales coming from family, friends and their referrals, the first 9 months of business were a success. However, despite breaking even within 9 months, youâre yet to achieve 5% market share. In the course of the 15 months youâve been operating, you have made changes in your operations policy twice. That didnât make much of a difference though. Whereas youâre still making profit, youâre not growing fast enough. One of your bakers, the more skilled of the two, was poached by a competitor. Now youâre training a new hire. This is quite a setback given your desire to grow fast.Do yo need to make more changes to your operations policy? Do you need to start making more cake flavors? Buy advertising space on TV and the dailies? What do you do? What exactly is the problem? And how do you solve it?Identifying the ProblemAs mentioned, there are symptoms and causes. This is also true in this situation. Here are the signs that there is a problem in this bakery business.Resignation of a skilled employee (the poached baker)Slow growthIncreased operational costs (training new baker)Reduced profitsHaving recognized that there is a problem, do not rush to assume what caused them. Take your time to find out why the problem exists. From our example situation, the possible causes of the bakerâs resignation could be many. It could be an unfriendly working environment, low compensation, low employee engagement, lack of career growth opportunities etc. Since ours is an example, the list of possibilities can be long.In your case however, you will have to drill down to the specifics. Even if the majority of businesses relate certain symptoms to specific causes, you better confirm that itâs the case with you. Do not just tackle the problem as others are doing. There are at least three ways of identifying the problem. But then, these depend on the status of your business. Are you already in business and looking to make improvements? Or are you researching on strategic plans as part of your plan to start your business? If youâre yet to start your business, then the first idea given below may not be relevant to you. Read it for insight though so youâre informed. All the same, the other two will come in handy as they can be part of your market research.Talk to your employees â" your employees know a lot about the companyâs workings than you think. They may not match your education, experience, determination, wisdom or even wealth. Still, being th e ones driving operations, they always have suggestions to make.As a wise manager or business owner, itâs important to recognize the importance of employee engagement. Having your staff engaged has many benefits. Here is a short video on employee engagement. One way to foster engagement is by using the management strategy called Management By Walking Around. This method encourages the management team to intentionally interact with lower-cadre employees. This helps them understand the working environment and assist accordingly.Another way of talking to your employees is by using the bottom-up communication strategy. If you stick to the top-down communication method as many organizations do, youâll miss some valuable insight from your team.Talk to customers â" this is crucial for any business as customer feedback tells you how to satisfy customer needs. If you havenâs started your business yet, the customers you talk to can be your family, friends or even a stranger in the shop youâre planning to compete against.Itâs all about finding out his opinion about the businessâ"how it treats customers, the quality of their products, favorite products, quality of services etc.If your business is already running, you have some extra cards at your disposal. You can choose to include Live Chat in your website or blog, feedback forms, email surveys or even make periodic calls to your customers. And being in the digital world we are in, do not forget or ignore social media platforms. To benefit greatly from social media, use social listening tools. These tell you when and where your products or services are being discussed. Checking out those pages or platforms will give you great customer feedback.Check alternative offerings â" your solution is only good when it delivers on the needs and wants of the customers. And if your goal is to beat the competition, then you have to know where the competition is failing. If alternative products or services can be purchased, tha t would be good. Buy and test them. If buying seems challenging, then read online reviews and comments from the manufacturers and their customers. This stage of identifying the problem to be solved is often the most challenging. For you to be unique and grow, you have to solve a real problem.Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the founders of Instagram, realized this before they developed the photo-sharing app. They found out that the algorithm part was not the most difficult. The biggest challenge was identifying the problem to solve. Watch Kevin talk about it in the below video. 2. Define the SolutionOnce you know what the real problem is, itâs time to define the solution. This is a very simple step to take.If the customers are not happy with certain aspects of the options currently available, then your product should fix that. Succeeding in doing so is what will prove your prowess and establish you as the solution. This way, what you offer will sell well. And upon satisfying customer needs, youâll move towards becoming the market leader. When you define your solution, communicate it and ensure everyone understands it.One way of simplifying this is by coming up with a solution statement. This will guide the daily operations and serve as motivation for achieving the set goals. You can have a solution statement for the whole business or for individual departments. For instance, you may have a product which needs improvements so as to compete better against the competition. For that to happen, the solution may include making changes to the product, changing the marketing strategy and improving on logistics. The production department can have their own solution statement telling them how they should improve the product so as to make it better. The marketing department can have one telling them how to market the product better. The logistics guys can as well have a solution statement telling guiding them on how to improve product availability. Here is an example that has b een perfectly crafted showing both the need (problem) and the solution. Itâs from the African Leadership Academy. Source: ELPowerpoints20133. SWOT AnalysisHaving a solution statement is like knowing where youâre going. This is the vision you have to achieve. If youâre developing a product, you know what you want it to do and even how it will look like. You know the needs it should satisfy and in which way. With that, you now find out how best to go about the process. This will lead you to the SWOT analysis which looks at your Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats. After analyzing these, you will know which route is the best to follow to reach your goal. This is the route that is most efficient and least expensive. For a successful SWOT analysis, you should check the whole business and not just yourself or the management team. It is said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This is true in every team formation.Do not overlook any team or department and assume that they are strong enough. Check them out individually to ascertain their contribution. Here is how to do it:Streng ths â" your strengths are the things which give you a natural competitive edge. Note the word ânatural.â As much as you may improve your skills and even learn new ones, start by first listing those which come naturally. For example, if a member of your team loves engaging with others and easily influences people to follow her, then you have a marketer. This is regardless of whether she is currently holding that position or not.If you have someone who loves details, is very analytical and loves proving theories right or wrong, then you have a potential data analyst. This person can also be an accountant or even an internal auditor.Checking out your strengths should not be limited only to human resources. Do you happen to have a fat bank account? Maybe you can hire the best talent. Many company vehicles? You could have more efficient deliveries. What about your location? If youâre close to the market then you can save transport costs.Do you have special relationships with supplie rs, marketing agencies, media personalities, influencers etc? Those could come in handy too. Especially if the competition doesnât have the same.Weaknesses â" though not the most fun things to discover, your companyâs weaknesses are nevertheless important to know. Ignoring them will be like allowing a broken wall to remain unrepaired.Knowing your weaknesses helps you know what to avoid. You can also use the knowledge to improve specific skills which are required to fulfill your goals. For example, you may have financial constraints. This will prevent you from hiring the best marketing agency. And since you donât have any employee naturally good at marketing, you can opt to pick one and train him on social media marketing.Obviously, the marketing agency would have done more. They can come up with a marketing strategy, create blog content (text, images and videos), advertise in the dailies etc. However, you can substitute much of that through social media marketing.Opportunities â " opportunities are all over and businesses never lack these. In most cases, opportunities come in the form of problems. Whenever there is a problem, it is an opportunity to come up with a solution. Itâs just a matter of who comes up with a solution first.Related to providing the solution, take heed not to be distracted by the need or desire to develop the best solution all at once. This will delay your progress.By the time your perfect solution is out, your competitor may have several versions of imperfect solutions and has built his brand.Having gone through the step of identifying the problem, you certainly have an opportunity to showcase what you have.More than that, anything else related to the problem youâre solving is an opportunity. For example, you may have picked the problem of delivering purchased products to your customers since others donât do it.A related problem is creating convenience in payments. Add different payment options and ensure the whole system is secu re.If you decide to handle the absence or limited availability of healthy drinks, you can later on venture into healthy snacks. As you do your research, itâs important to consider the possibilities of growing your brand. Generally speaking though, opportunities always abound. You just have to keep your eyes and mind open and have the right attitude.Threats â" depending on your industry, the threats facing your business may be many or little. Itâs important to note that threats are very different from weaknesses though the two may be connected.Whereas weaknesses are usually internal in nature, threats are external. Threats are all about the factors which you can neither control nor accurately predict. As such, it can be very difficult identifying threats to your business. Some threats include economic factors, cyber crime, climate changes to weather-dependent businesses, political support and government regulations. Business threats can bring an established company tumbling down v ery easily. The best thing to do is to try and do a lot of research prior to settling for a business idea. And while the business is still running, do your best to stay informed and anticipate changes. You can check out this article for some questions to help you identify potential business threats.Knowing what you can do and what to avoid, you can now proceed to work on the execution of the strategy.4. Define Departmental Goals and Set TimelinesThe strategy will be executed at the departmental level.that doesnât mean that everyone just goes ahead and implements their own interpretation of the strategic plan. There has to be order. As the business owner or leader or part of the management, youâll have to break the vision into something smaller.Instead of posting the vision on the company notice board and letting people work towards it, let every department know what theyâre expected to do and achieve. This will make it easier since everyone knows what their contribution is. It als o motivates the individual employees as they see the relevance of what they do and how it adds to the end results. As you break down the big goal into smaller departmental goals, try and make your goals smart. You have most likely read or heard much about SMART goals. True to their popularity, they are indeed helpful. They are even revolutionary if you have fallen into the pit of frustration from failing to achieve your goals. Source: Edward GiffordHere are some examples of how this could work out:IT DepartmentFind and install the best freeware tools to help improve the security and efficiency of the companyâs IT Infrastructure.Tools to be used include firewall systems, antivirus systems and system cleanup and speedup tools. This should be achieved within 3 months.Finance DepartmentPerform an internal audit of the financial status of the company and advise on ways to improve cash flow without interfering with the marketing budget. This should be finished within 3 months.HR DepartmentDraft policies on employee training, compensation and non-discrimination. Implement the same to achieve a minimum of 20% employee engagement at work. This should be achieved in 6 months.Every other department should have similar goals clearly defined and committed to.5. AccountabilityDepartmental goals should be communicated from the top management to the departmental heads. This will make the managers accountable.Even if the communication in the organization is great, you should avoid calling a meeting and presenting this to all the staff at the same time.Though many people arenât huge fans of being held accountable, this is a necessity if success is to be realized. In case your employees do not appreciate accountability, then you have to instill it into them. Here is a great video showing how to hold people accountable. And the most important part of it is that it all starts with you. As the head of each department takes the responsibility of overseeing the realization of his departmentâs goals, he is to communicate the expectations to his team. The individual teams will divide the work among themselves and work towards the goals.Itâs crucial to help the managers understand how their work affects the other teamsâ work. For example, if the IT team doesnât secure the company systems, there may be a ransomware attack. That could negatively affect the company as operations may be affected and money u sed to pay the attackers. If the HR department doesnât work on improving employee engagement, employees are likely to be unproductive at work. This results in reduced productivity and loss of business opportunities. In that situation, no goals will be achieved in spite of the strategic plans in place.6. RolloutWith everyone understanding the role theyâre to play, itâs now action time.As you roll out your strategic plan, keep in mind that implementing a plan is a process. Every department must come up with a way of achieving their goals.âStrategy without process is little more than a wish list.â Robert FilekKey in successfully implementing the plan is to identify any task dependencies. If the execution of one task depends on anotherâs results, then they should be arranged accordingly. The idea is to help avoid a backlog of tasks. With a smooth flow of tasks, resources are also well planned for. There will be less wastage and whatever is available will be put to good use.7. Review and ImproveThe set timelines are essential in tracking the progress of the individual and overall business plan. However, you must remember that you have dealt with the factors you are able to. There are factors which are beyond your control.Apart from the threats you identified at the third stage of this process, the nature of business is that itâs simply unpredictable. It therefore becomes necessary to make relevant changes to your strategic plan as time goes by.The beautiful thing about a strategic plan, or more simply, a strategy, is that it doesnât change much.Youâll not need to make big changes but small improvements as the business environment changes.âAfter a business implements a strategy, competitors will react, and the firmâs strategy will need to adapt to meet the new challenges. There is no stopping point and no final battle. The competitive cycle continues on perpetually. Produce and compete or perish.â Thomas Timings HolmeThe reviewing and improvin g part of implementing a strategic plan is crucial. Understand that flexibility is part of the strategy. So the overall strategic plan anticipates changes. The responses and reactions of the competition should be watched keenly and responded to quickly.Try and understand what the competitorâs reaction means and where it could be intended to lead.CONCLUSIONAs you think of making a strategic plan, keep in mind that the biggest challenge is in identifying the problem.Itâs possible that a business produces a solution to a non-existent product.Once you understand the problem and come up with a solution, launch it and have a clear path to follow towards achieving your goal.

Family Dilemma In Sonnys Blues - Free Essay Example
Sonnys Blues is a story written by James Baldwin about two brothers living in Harlem. The story starts when the narrator learns about his brothers imprisonment through a newspaper. His brother Sonny was caught using and selling heroin. The narrator remembers his brother when he was young which makes him realize that his students may suffer the same fate. While in prison the narrator does not communicate with his younger brother until the death of his daughter. The two then remain in constant communication until Sonny leaves prison. Sonny then goes to live with the narrator. The narrator then remembers his childhood. He also remembers taking care of Sonny after their mother died. Their relationship is complicated as they disagree on Sonnys path in life. In the end, the narrator understands Sonnys struggles as he watches him on stage playing jazz. The primary dilemma facing the main character is if he whether to relate with his brother based on his own values or to respect his brothers perspective of life. This dilemma is related to the central theme of barriers in life caused by societal factors. At the beginning the protagonist decides to follow a paternalistic approach towards his brother which causes him conflict , he then chooses to listen to his brother after realizing that their environment was not conducive for success. The main character is the narrator of the story since the entire tale is about the life in Harlem and the actions of Sonny through his view and perspective. The narrators conflict involves raising his own brother so that he can be a great man. This conflict starts immediately he is forced into parenthood at an early age. While he is in the military, the narrator is told by his mother to take care of his brother after she dies. His mother insists that he should not leave his brother no matter what happens to him (Baldwin 108). He ignores her pleas as he believes that nothing wrong will happen. However, his mother dies while he still in the military. The main character begins to experience conflict as he does not know how to parent his younger sibling. Until this point, his interaction with his brother has been minimal. He even realizes that he has not been playing the role of a big brother effectively. The dilemma in the story is seen as the narrator is expected to make critical decisions about his brothers life. One crucial decision that the main character is supposed to make is about the career of Sonny. Sonny expresses his interest in being a jazz musician. The narrator, on the other hand, is influenced by the expectations of the society and his idea about how life should be. He believes that it is important for a person to finish high school first then he or she can proceed to follow his dreams. He also believes that a person needs to go to college. The narrator also prefers careers that look more serious. He then decides to persuade Sonny to finish high school first a decision that he is not sure of (Baldwin 112). The story shows that the narrator had a conflict with the decision he had made about the direction that Sonny should take. This is evident in the description of Sonnys life after his brother had returned to the military. Sonny was forced to live with his sister in law and her parents. At their house, Sonny was serious about his music and practiced the piano every day. He played the instrument immediately he came from school. Sonny also played the piano after dinner until everyone had gone to sleep. He also spent the weekends with the piano (Baldwin 112). This shows that Sonny was serious about his plans and willing to do anything to achieve his dream. The narrator, however, kept on using his values to judge his brother. This continued even after Sonny had stopped living with his sister in law and had joined the navy. It is expected that the protagonist would allow Sonny who is now an adult to make his own decisions. He, however, continues to disagree with his brother. The main character explains that he does not like Sonnys friends and his music career. He believes the music is an excuse to live an irresponsible life. Eventually, they have a serious fight, and Sonny tells the narrator that he should consider him dead (Baldwin 113). The author begins to doubt his methods of raising his brother as he fears that he is responsible for how his brother has turned. While his mother was alive, she put pressure on him by telling by telling the story of his father. His fathers brother who was hit by a vehicle and died immediately. This experience affected his father, and he never recovered (Baldwin 107). The main character remembers this story as his brother had become a drug addict. He feels as if he should have done better. The perception of failure by the main character is also seen as he describes his feeling after finding out that his brother was sentenced to prison. He compares his mood to a block of ice that is melting and also expanding in his stomach causing him pain. The narrator feels this way because he did not expect his brother to turn out the way he did. Sonny was once a young boy full of promise (Baldwin 99). The prison sentence adds more conflict on how he can integrate Sonny back to the society. He is worried that bringing him back home would lead to relapse since the area is the same environment which pushed Sonny to use drugs (Baldwin 105). This serves as the climax of the story as the author begins to focus on a different approach to their relationship. He starts to listen to Sonny so that he can understand his perspective and why he made the wrong choices. Sonny opens up and explains how the frustrations in life pushed him to drugs and a reckless lifestyle. The main character also accepts to go to Sonnys performance. Watching Sonny sing makes the narrator understand his brothers struggles and feel that they could repair their relationship (Baldwin 121). The primary dilemma of the protagonist is related to the central theme which is the impact of societal factors on the success of the individuals. Throughout the story, the narrator shows the influence of Harlem on his brothers behavior and their frustrations. He explains that it is normal for people living in the area to turn to criminals as they grow older. He attributes these frustrations to the lack of opportunities in the neighborhood. He provides an example of his students whose growth is likely to be stopped suddenly due to the low ceiling that is placed on their abilities (Baldwin 99). The protagonist also explains that the neighborhood has a permanent impact on someones life. He demonstrates that it is impossible to leave Harlem. If a person manages to get out, he has to leave a part of himself (Baldwin 105). This statement is evident as both Sonny and the narrator continue to live in the neighborhood several years later. Here the story shows that even though people take different paths in life, the outcome might still be the same due to the environmental factors. The protagonists dilemma could not be resolved at first since he believed that he could change the outcomes of their lives by following a different path. However, the central theme shows that he had to accept his brother first and accept the challenges that they both face. In conclusion, the primary dilemma facing the main character is if he whether to relate with his brother based on his own values or to respect his brothers perspective of life. At first, he forces Sonny to go to school and abandon music. This, however, fails as Sonny rebels and later on starts using drugs. Sonny is then sent to prison. The main character begins to believe that he is the cause of Sonnys failure. Later on, he starts listening to Sonny, and they improve their relationship. The protagonists primary dilemma is related to the central theme since it is evident that environmental factors beyond their control cause the failures of the main narrator and Sonny.
